When to sow

October to November for an early spring harvest, or February to March for a summer harvest. Broad beans are one of the hardiest vegetables you can grow. They handle Irish winters better than almost anything else.

How to grow

Sow 5cm deep, 20cm apart. They do not need staking until they reach 60cm or so. Pinch out the growing tip when the first pods appear. This reduces blackfly and directs energy into the beans.

Recipe idea

Broad bean and pecorino bruschetta. Shell and blanch the beans for two minutes, slip off the grey skins. Smash roughly with a fork, add a squeeze of lemon, a drizzle of olive oil and shavings of pecorino. Pile onto toasted bread. This is a standard Roman antipasto.

Piccolo Provenzale is a rustic dwarf heritage pea from Provence. Compact plants that do not need tall supports. Sweet, flavourful peas in abundant pods. One of the best varieties for small gardens, containers and raised beds.

Sow direct outdoors from March. Support with short twiggy sticks or a low net. The peas are good enough to eat straight from the pod while you are standing in the garden. That is the test of a proper pea variety.

Featured on the BBC programme “Grow Your Own” with Carol Kline in January 2007, this variety has a long history of reliability and taste. With approximately 200 seeds per packet (70 g), Piccolo Provenzale is perfect for fresh eating, freezing, or adding to soups and risottos.

🌱 Sowing information

Sow from February to mid‑May for spring crops, and again from July to end of November for autumn sowings.

Plant seeds 3-5 cm deep in drills spaced 40-45 cm apart.

Compact plants require little support, making them ideal for smaller gardens.

☀️ Light exposure

Prefers full sun for strong growth and sweet pods. Partial shade is tolerated but may reduce yields.

💧 Water needs

Keep soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and pod formation. Avoid waterlogging.

🌡️ Germination temperature & time

Seeds germinate at 7-18 °C, usually within 7-14 days.

📏 Plant spacing & final size

Space plants 5-8 cm apart in rows 40-45 cm apart. Mature plants remain dwarf, around 40-50 cm tall.
