Broccolo Ramoso Calabrese is a traditional Italian broccoli that gives you more than one harvest. Cut the compact central head first, then the plant sends out a generous flush of side shoots that you keep picking for weeks. More broccoli from one plant than most modern varieties.

Tender, flavourful and fast growing. Transplant outside in May and harvest from summer into autumn. Excellent steamed, roasted, or tossed through pasta with garlic and olive oil.

Growing information
🌱 Sowing
Sow in trays or directly outdoors on a fine, well‑prepared seedbed.
Transplant when seedlings are sturdy, keeping the soil consistently moist for strong establishment.
☀️ Light
Thrives in full sun but tolerates light partial shade, especially in warmer climates.
💧 Watering
Water regularly to maintain steady growth and prevent stress.
Aim for even moisture rather than heavy, infrequent watering.
🌡️ Germination
Germinates in roughly 7–14 days in moist soil at mild spring or early‑summer temperatures.
📏 Spacing & size
Transplant or thin to about 40–50 cm between plants for good airflow and head development.
Keep 50–60 cm between rows to allow for easy access and side‑shoot production.

Bullet Technical Data
🌱 Sowing depth: approx. 1 cm
📅 Sow: late spring to midsummer (typically May–July in mild climates)
☀️ Light: full sun or light partial shade
🌡️ Germination: 7–14 days in favourable conditions
📏 Height: medium‑tall plants with upright habit
🪴 Spacing: 40–50 cm between plants; 50–60 cm between rows
⏳ Harvest: from around 60–80 days after transplanting, with continued side‑shoot production
🔢 Seeds: approx. standard packet (8 g)

Cetriolino Piccolo Verde di Parigi is the classic French gherkin for making your own pickles at home. Small, crisp fruits that are ready to harvest at 5 to 8cm long. The more you pick, the more it produces.

If you have ever paid supermarket prices for a jar of cornichons, growing your own will seem absurd. One plant gives you enough gherkins for several jars. Brine them, vinegar them, or eat them fresh with cheese and cold meats.

🌱 Sowing: April indoors, late May to June outdoors

☀️ Light: Full sun, warm sheltered position

🌡️ Germination: 7 to 14 days

📏 Growth: Vigorous vines with dense foliage

🪴 Spacing: 40 to 50 cm between plants, 120 to 150 cm between rows

⏳ Harvest: From 50 to 70 days, pick fruits at 6 to 10 cm

🌿 Growing tips for Ireland Gherkins need warmth, so start indoors in April. Sow one or two seeds per small pot, about 1 cm deep, and keep warm on a windowsill or in a propagator. Do not transplant outdoors until after the last frost, late May at the earliest in most of Ireland.

Choose the warmest, most sheltered spot you have. A south facing wall, a polytunnel, or a large container on a sunny patio all work well. Water consistently at the base to prevent bitterness, and avoid wetting the leaves as this encourages mildew. The single most important tip: pick the gherkins frequently, every two to three days when they are producing. The more you pick, the more they grow. Leave them on the vine too long and they swell into seedy, bitter cucumbers instead of crisp little cornichons.

Mulch around the base to retain moisture and keep fruits clean. If growing in the open, train the vines slightly off the ground on a short support or netting to improve airflow and reduce disease.

Desiree is a purple-podded pea that tastes as good as it looks. Compact plants around 70 to 80cm tall, easy to support with a low net or pea sticks. The dark purple pods are straight and plump, each about 8 to 9cm long with 7 to 8 sweet peas inside.

The purple colour makes them easy to spot at harvest time. Children love finding them among the foliage. Early variety, so you can sow from March for a June harvest.
