Aguadulce Supersimonia is a broad bean with extra-long pods containing up to 8 or 9 beans each. Strong upright plants around 110 to 120cm tall with good cold tolerance. One of the most productive broad bean varieties available.

Sow in autumn for an early crop, or in spring for a summer harvest. Broad beans are one of the easiest and most reliable crops for Irish gardens. The young beans are sweet enough to eat raw with a piece of pecorino and some olive oil.

When to sow

October to November for an early spring harvest, or February to March for a summer harvest. Broad beans are one of the hardiest vegetables you can grow. They handle Irish winters better than almost anything else.

How to grow

Sow 5cm deep, 20cm apart. They do not need staking until they reach 60cm or so. Pinch out the growing tip when the first pods appear. This reduces blackfly and directs energy into the beans.

Recipe idea

Broad bean and pecorino bruschetta. Shell and blanch the beans for two minutes, slip off the grey skins. Smash roughly with a fork, add a squeeze of lemon, a drizzle of olive oil and shavings of pecorino. Pile onto toasted bread. This is a standard Roman antipasto.

Broccolo Ramoso Calabrese is a traditional Italian broccoli that gives you more than one harvest. Cut the compact central head first, then the plant sends out a generous flush of side shoots that you keep picking for weeks. More broccoli from one plant than most modern varieties.

Tender, flavourful and fast growing. Transplant outside in May and harvest from summer into autumn. Excellent steamed, roasted, or tossed through pasta with garlic and olive oil.

Growing information
🌱 Sowing
Sow in trays or directly outdoors on a fine, well‑prepared seedbed.
Transplant when seedlings are sturdy, keeping the soil consistently moist for strong establishment.
☀️ Light
Thrives in full sun but tolerates light partial shade, especially in warmer climates.
💧 Watering
Water regularly to maintain steady growth and prevent stress.
Aim for even moisture rather than heavy, infrequent watering.
🌡️ Germination
Germinates in roughly 7-14 days in moist soil at mild spring or early‑summer temperatures.
📏 Spacing & size
Transplant or thin to about 40-50 cm between plants for good airflow and head development.
Keep 50-60 cm between rows to allow for easy access and side‑shoot production.

Bullet Technical Data

Cetriolino Piccolo Verde di Parigi is the classic French gherkin for making your own pickles at home. Small, crisp fruits that are ready to harvest at 5 to 8cm long. The more you pick, the more it produces.

If you have ever paid supermarket prices for a jar of cornichons, growing your own will seem absurd. One plant gives you enough gherkins for several jars. Brine them, vinegar them, or eat them fresh with cheese and cold meats.

🌱 Sowing: April indoors, late May to June outdoors

☀️ Light: Full sun, warm sheltered position

🌡️ Germination: 7 to 14 days

📏 Growth: Vigorous vines with dense foliage

🪴 Spacing: 40 to 50 cm between plants, 120 to 150 cm between rows

⏳ Harvest: From 50 to 70 days, pick fruits at 6 to 10 cm

🌿 Growing tips for Ireland Gherkins need warmth, so start indoors in April. Sow one or two seeds per small pot, about 1 cm deep, and keep warm on a windowsill or in a propagator. Do not transplant outdoors until after the last frost, late May at the earliest in most of Ireland.

Choose the warmest, most sheltered spot you have. A south facing wall, a polytunnel, or a large container on a sunny patio all work well. Water consistently at the base to prevent bitterness, and avoid wetting the leaves as this encourages mildew. The single most important tip: pick the gherkins frequently, every two to three days when they are producing. The more you pick, the more they grow. Leave them on the vine too long and they swell into seedy, bitter cucumbers instead of crisp little cornichons.

Mulch around the base to retain moisture and keep fruits clean. If growing in the open, train the vines slightly off the ground on a short support or netting to improve airflow and reduce disease.

Cosmic Purple is a carrot with intense purple skin and a contrasting sweet orange core. Slice one crosswise and the two-tone effect is genuinely stunning. The flavour is sweet with a slightly earthy note that is different from standard orange carrots.

Roots are medium length, about 18 to 20cm, and grow well in most Irish soils. The purple colour comes from anthocyanins, the same antioxidants found in blueberries. Children find the purple colour fascinating, which is a useful trick for getting them to eat vegetables.

When to sow

April to May. Sow individually in small pots indoors from late April. Transplant outside in May after frost risk passes. In Ireland, courgettes grow well without any protection from June onwards.

How to grow

Give each plant a square metre of space. Feed with a general liquid feed every two weeks once flowering starts. Pick courgettes when they reach 15 to 20cm. If you leave them longer they become marrows, which are less useful in the kitchen.

Recipe idea

Courgette and lemon pasta. Slice two courgettes into thin rounds, fry in olive oil for five minutes. Add the zest of one lemon, a handful of Parmesan, salt and cooked pasta. Toss together off the heat. Ready in fifteen minutes.

The classic Italian striped courgette. One plant produces more than you can eat. Firm flesh, nutty flavour. Pick them small for the best taste.

The post Courgette Seeds Striato d’Italia | Classic Italian Striped Zucchini appeared first on BloomySeeds.

One plant. That is all you need. A single Striato d’Italia will produce courgettes from July until the first frost, and you will be giving them away to the neighbours by August.

The fruits are deep green with pale stripes and slight ribbing. The flesh is firm and holds its shape in the pan, with a full, nutty flavour that bland supermarket courgettes cannot match.

The plants also produce plenty of large golden flowers, which you can stuff with ricotta, batter and fry. A proper Italian treat.

🌱 Sowing information
Sow indoors March to April in pots or modules, one seed per pot, about 2cm deep. Plant out after the last frost (late May in most of Ireland). Or sow directly outdoors from late May once the soil is warm.

☀️ Light exposure
Full sun. Courgettes need warmth and light to produce well. A sheltered, sunny spot with rich soil is ideal. They also grow well in large containers on a warm patio.

💧 Water needs
Water generously and regularly, especially once fruits start forming. Courgettes are mostly water themselves, so they drink a lot. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and keeps fruits clean.

🌡️ Germination temperature and time
Seeds germinate in 5 to 10 days at 18 to 24°C. They are large seeds and easy to handle. Sow on their side to prevent rotting. Do not sow too early as seedlings grow fast and get leggy indoors.

📏 Plant spacing and final size
Space plants 80 to 100cm apart. They need room. Each plant forms a large, spreading bush. Pick fruits at 15 to 20cm for the best flavour. If you let them grow to marrow size, the plant slows down.

🌼 Harvesting notes
Harvest July to October. Check plants every two days in peak season. Courgettes grow fast and a 15cm fruit on Monday can be a 30cm marrow by Thursday. Keep picking and the plant keeps producing.

🍽️ In the kitchen
Grilled with olive oil, ribboned raw into salads, grated into pasta, or sliced into a frittata. The flowers are stuffed with ricotta and anchovy, then lightly fried.

When to sow

May to June direct in the ground. French beans do not like cold soil. Wait until the end of May in most of Ireland. Sow 5cm deep, 10cm apart, alongside a cane or trellis.

How to grow

Beans fix their own nitrogen so they do not need feeding. Water regularly once pods start forming. Pick often, even if you do not need all of them. The more you pick, the more the plant produces. Stop picking and the plant stops flowering.

Recipe idea

Green beans with garlic and olive oil. Blanch the beans for three minutes, drain and toss immediately with two crushed garlic cloves and good olive oil. Salt. Done. The whole point of these beans is their flavour, so do not overcook them.

Swiss Chard Colour Mix gives you stems in red, orange, yellow and white, all from one packet. The dark green crinkled leaves are equally good sauteed, steamed or added to soups. As productive as spinach but much hardier in cool weather.

One of the most visually striking vegetables you can grow. The coloured stems look beautiful in the garden and on the plate. Cut the outer leaves and the plant keeps producing new ones from the centre. Lasts from late spring well into winter.

Uchiki Kuri, also known as Red Kuri or Hokkaido squash, is a Japanese heirloom with deep orange skin, dense nutty flesh and a flavour that sits somewhere between chestnut and sweet potato. Weighs 1 to 2kg. One of the best soup squashes you can grow.

The skin softens when roasted, so there is no need to peel it. Cut in half, roast until tender, scoop the flesh into a blender with stock and seasoning. Dinner in 40 minutes. Stores well for three to four months after harvest.

🌿 Plants are vigorous and highly productive, developing long trailing vines that perform best in open ground or spacious garden beds.

🌱 Growing information

🌱 Seeds can be sown indoors from March to May, or sown directly outdoors once all risk of frost has passed. When transplanting, handle young plants carefully to avoid disturbing the roots.

☀️ Uchiki Kuri needs full sun to grow well and ripen fruits properly.

💧 Water regularly, especially while fruits are forming. Try to water at soil level and avoid wetting the leaves.

🌡️ Under warm conditions, seeds usually germinate within 7-14 days.

📏 Allow plenty of space for growth, planting 100-150 cm apart to accommodate the trailing vines.

⏳ Harvest from September to October, once the skin has hardened and the stem has dried. After harvest, cure fruits for about 10 days in a warm, dry place to improve storage life. Mulching around plants helps retain moisture and supports healthy growth.
