Green Imperial Star is an heirloom globe artichoke that can produce in its first year from seed. Large silvery-green foliage and generous edible buds. Once established, it comes back year after year, getting more productive with each season.

Steam the buds and eat the tender bases of the leaves dipped in melted butter or vinaigrette. The heart, once you reach it, is the real prize. A stunning architectural plant that doubles as a genuine food crop.

🌱 Growing at a glance
🌱 Sowing: February–May or August–September
☀️ Light: Full sun
💧 Water: Deep, regular watering
🌡️ Germination: 14–21 days
📏 Height: 1.2–1.5 m
🪴 Spacing: 90–100 cm
⏳ Harvest: From the second year onwards

🌿 Growing tips
Start seeds early for stronger plants and protect young growth from frost. After harvesting the main central bud, allow side shoots to develop for smaller secondary artichokes. Mulch well over winter in colder areas.

One of the easiest flowers you can grow from seed in Ireland.

Eschscholtzia californica produces cup-shaped flowers in a rich range of vivid colours on upright stems to 40 cm. Fine silver-green foliage. Flowers close at night and in dull weather, then open fully in sun. Self-seeds freely once established, so a single sowing often gives you flowers for years.

🌿 Sowing: March to May or August to September
📏 Height: 40 cm
🍸 Use: Flower beds and gardens

Growing tips for Ireland
Sow directly where it will flower. California poppy does not like being transplanted. It actually thrives in poor, well-drained soil and performs worse if fed or over-watered. A dry, sunny spot is ideal. Once established it self-seeds and comes back year after year with no effort on your part.

🇮🇪 BloomySeeds is the Irish stockist of Franchi Sementi seed. Every packet is genuine, traceable and DAFM registered.

Cultivated rocket with fresh, tart, peppery flavour. The kind of salad leaf that makes a plain green salad actually interesting. Deeply lobed leaves that add a spicy lift to pizzas, steaks, and anything with blue cheese or cured meats. Naturally high in vitamin C.

Sow a short row every two to three weeks from March to September and you will never run out. Ready to cut in about four weeks. Grows back after cutting for a second and third harvest. Approximately 6,000 seeds per packet, so one packet lasts the whole year.

🌱 Sowing information
Sow March–September in shallow drills outdoors, raised beds or containers using fertile, free‑draining soil. Cover lightly (0.5–1 cm), water gently and keep moist. For continuous harvests, sow small batches every 2–3 weeks. Early and late sowings can be made under cover for extended cropping.
☀️ Light exposure
Grows well in full sun to light partial shade. In warmer or sheltered spots, a little afternoon shade helps prevent bolting and keeps leaves tender.
💧 Water needs
Keep soil consistently moist to avoid bitterness and premature flowering. Regular watering, especially in containers, supports fast leafy growth and good flavour.
🌡️ Germination temperature & time
Germinates quickly at 10–20 °C, usually in 4–10 days. Early spring sowings benefit from fleece or a cloche; late‑summer sowings germinate readily in warm soil.
📏 Plant spacing & final size
For cut‑and‑come‑again harvests, sow thickly and thin to 10 cm. For larger rosettes, space 15–20 cm apart in rows 20–30 cm apart. Plants reach 15–25 cm tall.
🌼 Harvesting notes
Harvest baby leaves at 5–7 cm, cutting outer leaves and allowing the centre to regrow. Regular picking delays flowering. Edible flowers can be used as a peppery garnish.

Piccolo Provenzale is a rustic dwarf heritage pea from Provence. Compact plants that do not need tall supports. Sweet, flavourful peas in abundant pods. One of the best varieties for small gardens, containers and raised beds.

Sow direct outdoors from March. Support with short twiggy sticks or a low net. The peas are good enough to eat straight from the pod while you are standing in the garden. That is the test of a proper pea variety.

Featured on the BBC programme “Grow Your Own” with Carol Kline in January 2007, this variety has a long history of reliability and taste. With approximately 200 seeds per packet (70 g), Piccolo Provenzale is perfect for fresh eating, freezing, or adding to soups and risottos.

Scarola Verde a Cuore Pieno is a classic Italian escarole with large flat heads, a full pale golden heart and outer leaves that are deep green and slightly bitter. The heart is the prize: mild, crunchy, and excellent in winter salads.

This is the endive you braise with garlic and olive oil, stuff into a pizza di scarola, or chop raw into a salad with anchovy and capers. Hardy and reliable in Irish autumn and winter gardens. A genuine Italian kitchen essential.
