9 in stock

Neckargold is a classic climbing French bean that produces tall, vigorous plants around 190 cm high, ideal for wigwams, fences or any sturdy support. The pods are straight, round and very fleshy, with an intense deep yellow colour, typically 23–27 cm long and completely stringless when picked at the right stage.
Flavour is excellent: tender, juicy pods with a fine texture that hold well in the pan and freeze nicely, making this variety a favourite for both fresh eating and preserving. Neckargold is robust, very productive and has good disease tolerance, including resistance to bean mosaic virus in many listings.

Growing information

🌱 Sowing

  • Sow direct outdoors once the soil has warmed and frost has passed, ideally next to canes or netting so plants can climb straight away.

  • In Ireland‑type climates, sow from May to late July for cropping from mid‑summer into autumn.

☀️ Light

  • Needs full sun for strong growth and heavy cropping.

💧 Watering

  • Water regularly in dry spells, especially when plants are flowering and pods are filling, keeping soil moist but not waterlogged.

  • Mulch can help retain moisture and keep roots cool.

🌡️ Germination

  • Beans need warmth to germinate; in suitable soil they sprout in roughly 7–14 days, but can take longer in cooler conditions.

📏 Spacing & support

  • Sow 2 beans at each cane or station, 5 cm deep, then thin to the strongest seedling; space canes about 15–20 cm apart in the row.

  • Provide supports 1.8–2.0 m tall so vines can climb freely and pods hang straight and clean.

  4. Sprinkle with parsley if using and serve straight away as a simple side for grilled meat, fish or a grain dish.
